BUILDERS BUILDING LITERACY

Builders Building Literacy – One Book at a Time

Several years ago, as part of our annual Holiday festivities, the BAHV wanted to reach out to a local community program. Working with the Literacy Volunteers, simple children’s books were collected and distributed to new moms in hospitals to encourage early reading, local day care centers, etc.

That first year just over 250 books were collected. Every year the program has grown, with several thousand books donated in 2006.

Unfortunately, the success of the program was too much for one group to handle, and it became necessary to revisit the Builders Building Literacy program.

In 2007, the Committee opted to reach out to Literacy Volunteers in all of the six counties that we cover and offer to “spread the wealth” and provide each county with a minimum of 500 books to use in their literacy programs.

Builders Building Literacy is just one example of the generosity of BAHV members and recognition of the importance of reading for everyone.
